What you get, and what you own

1. Is the domain in my name?

Yes. The domain is registered with you as the registrant, using your name and your business details, not mine. If I buy it for you I bill it at cost and it is yours from the moment it is registered.

If you already own a domain, it stays exactly where it is. I do not need to move it and I will not ask you to.

2. Who owns the copyright?

You do, once the final payment clears. Copyright in the finished site — the pages, the words I write for you, the layout as built — passes to you at that point, and I will confirm it in writing if you want it on paper.

I am spelling this out because the law does not do it for you. Section 90(3) of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 says an assignment of copyright is not effective unless it is in writing and signed. Paying an invoice, on its own, does not transfer anything.

Two things I keep: the right to show your site as an example of my work, and ownership of anything I built before we met and reused here, such as the underlying page components. That second one does not stop you editing, moving or rebuilding your site with somebody else.

3. What does it cost to leave in year one?

Nothing. There is no exit fee, no release fee, no charge to hand over files, and no minimum term to buy your way out of. Not in year one and not later.

4. If I stop paying, does it come down?

No. If you stop the monthly, the site stays up and stays yours. I give you the files, point the domain wherever you say, and help you move to another host. What stops is the looking-after, not the site.

The one thing I cannot do is keep hosting it for free. If the site sits on hosting I pay for, you need somewhere to put it, and I will give you a fortnight to sort that out. If you host it yourself already, nothing happens at all.

5. Minimum term, and how do I cancel?

There is no minimum term. The monthly runs month to month, and you cancel by telling me — a message or an email is enough, and I will confirm it in writing. One month's notice, so you pay for the month you are in and nothing after it.

You do not have to ring anybody to cancel, and you will not be put through to anyone whose job is to talk you out of it.

6. Is hosting in that monthly, and what does it renew at?

Hosting is included in the care plan while you are on it. There is no separate hosting bill and no first-year discount that jumps later. The price you agree is the price it renews at, and if I ever need to change it I will tell you a clear month before it happens, not in a footnote.

The domain renews with your registrar, billed to you, at whatever they charge. I do not add anything to it.

7. What is the price with VAT?

The price you see is the price you pay. I am not VAT registered, so there is nothing added at the end. If that changes I will say so on the pricing page before it applies to anyone.

8. Who writes the words?

I do, and then you check them. I research what people in your trade and your area actually search for, write the pages, and send them to you before anything goes live. Nothing gets published in your name that you have not read.

I will not invent reviews, certifications, qualifications, or numbers about your business. If a claim needs proof, I will ask you for it, and if you cannot supply it the claim comes off the page.

9. How many pages, and which ones?

Written into the quote before you pay, by name, not as a count. You will see exactly which pages you are getting.

If you want something extra once we have started, I quote that separately and you decide before I do it. The agreed price for the agreed pages does not move.

Paying

• Half when you accept the quote, half when the site goes live.
• The price is fixed at the point we agree it.
• The care plan is monthly in advance, and starts when the site goes live.

What I need from you

Photos of your work, your certification numbers, and your logo if you have one. This is the part that holds jobs up, so I will chase you for it. Two weeks from the day it all lands, not from the day you say yes.

One sparky per town

While you are a client, I do not build for another electrician in your town. If you leave, that town opens again. I will tell you if somebody asks about it.

If something goes wrong

Tell me and I will fix it. If I have got something wrong in the build, I fix it at my cost. If we cannot agree, nothing here takes away any right you have under consumer or business protection law.

These terms are written in plain English rather than by a solicitor. That is a deliberate choice, not an oversight — a term you cannot read is not much protection. If anything here is unclear, ask me and I will put it in writing.
